There’s a good reason that Wascana Lake is considered one of the top attractions in Regina. At 93 hectares, the park is one of the largest in North America and actually predates the city itself, having been created 1883 by the damming of Wascana Creek. Wascana Lake is at the centre of many landmarks and activities in Regina including the Conexus Art Centre, the Royal Saskatchewan Museum and the Saskatchewan Science Centre.
In the winter, this water mass freezes over in typically Canadian fashion, offering an almost otherworldly backdrop to the city. The best day of the year to truly experience Wascana Lake is at Waskimo Winter Festival, an annual winter activity extravaganza that the community looks forward to every February. The Waskimo festival marks the only day of the year the public is officially allowed on to the frozen waters of Wascana Lake, an opportunity for some truly creative and raucous family-oriented activities.
Waskimo takes place on February 18th to coincide with the Family Day holiday. The event is great for families, offer lots of fun activities for both young and old. Outside on the lake, you can catch competitive outhouse races and snow cricket. You can also take a horse-drawn carriage ride around the lake – something the young ones are sure to love! If you’re looking to get out of the cold and want to do some indoor activities, the Conexus Art Centre will have some arcade games, an archery range, balloon art and face painting. There’s a lot to do so be sure to arrive early to experience it all.
After a jam-packed day of fun in and around Wascana Lake, you’ll want a comfortable retreat to return to. Located just a 10-minute drive away from the lakeshore is Days Inn Regina Airport West offers all the comfort and utility you need to make your stay in Regina a pleasant one.
